Two cops. Three crooks. Eight doors. Go! Auditions will be held from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13th and Wednesday, May 14th at the Frances Marion Brown Theater in Oswego for the Oswego Players summer production: the hilarious “Unnecessary Farce” by Paul Slade Smith, directed by Tom Briggs. This award-winning production debuted in 2006 and has been a firm favorite ever since for both audiences and actors alike. It combines all the elements of a classic farce with a contemporary American plot.
The auditions for “Unnecessary Farce” will be a cold reading from the script. There are parts for seven characters: four adult males (one of whom needs a Scottish accent) and three adult females. The play contains adult themes.
“This is an incredibly funny play, the comedy we need in these times,” said Briggs, who has been involved in Community Theater for over three decades and last directed at the Oswego Players in 2019. “I’m looking forward to pulling together a first rate cast and crew and providing the audience with genuine enjoyment and side-splitting laughter.”
“Unnecessary Farce” is set in a cheap motel room, where an embezzling mayor is supposed to meet with his female accountant, while in the room next door; two undercover cops wait to catch the meeting on videotape. But there’s some confusion as to who’s in which room, who’s being videotaped, who’s taken the money, who’s hired a hit man, and why bagpipes are necessary.
Performance times and dates for “Unnecessary Farce” are 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday July 11th, 12th, 18th and 19th and 2:00 p.m. Sunday July 13th and 20th.
