The Oswego Players, a local theatrical organization, will be honored this weekend with an official City Declaration of “Oswego Players Day.” The ceremony for this new local holiday will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday April 27th, and is open to the public. The proclamation will be immediately followed by a family-friendly double-feature of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “The Arkansaw Bear.”

“Oswego Players has been an institution since the late 1930s, and they’ve been presenting great shows by local casts ever since.” says Mayor Robert Corradino. “The idea to create an Oswego Players Day came easily, as they’ve been standard bearers of culture in our community for almost a century and are certain to continue uniting our residents through the arts for another hundred years.”

The Mayor’s Office made the decision to recognize the organization for its longevity and its impact on the community. The Oswego Players are known to be one of the oldest continuously operating community theaters in the state, having been organized in 1938 by Frances Marion Brown and fellow colleagues. In addition to their mission of advancing cultural activities of the community through theatrical productions, the organization also awards scholarships, sponsors theatrical education, and periodically presents productions by and for children.

“The city’s decision to celebrate its own community theater reinforces Oswego’s dedication to the arts and entertainments,” says Oswego Players President Tammy Thompson. “Without which, we have no culture, no identity. This speaks of the greatness of Oswego, and we are incredibly honored to be considered for an annual holiday! I for one am looking forward to celebrating Oswego Player’s Day, and I hope anyone reading this comes this Sunday to join us on in the festivities! This is as much about you as it is us!”
