The Oswego Players are pleased to announce auditions for their spring production of William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” This classic comedy for all ages will be directed by Norman Berlin III. This will be the first time in the 87-year history of the Oswego Players that a Shakespearean play will be produced. This version of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a one act and 80 minutes long.
This production of “Midsummer” will be paired with “The Arkansaw Bear” by Aurand Harris. Director Berlin will also be reprising the sellout smash hit of last season “The Arkansaw Bear”. “The Arkansaw Bear” is a moving 45-minute fantasy and drama dealing with loss and letting go.
The auditions for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” will be a cold reading from the script held at the Francis Marion Brown theatre in Oswego on Thursday, March 13th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 15th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. There are parts for approximately 25 roles, with numerous roles that could be either gender, ages ranging from ten to sixty.
“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is set in Athens and consists of numerous subplots that revolve around the marriage of King Theseus and Queen Hippolyta. One subplot involves a conflict among four teenage Athenian lovers. Another follows a group of six amateur actors rehearsing the play in which they are to perform before the wedding. Both groups of humans find themselves in a forest inhabited by fairies who manipulate the humans and are engaged in their own domestic intrigue. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is one of Shakespeare’s most popular and widely performed plays.
Performance dates for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “The Arkansaw Bear” are Friday nights on April 25th and May 2nd. The productions will have four matinee performances at 2:00 p.m. on April 26th, April 27th, May 3rd and May 4th.
